Hello World!
In my first post I’m going to analyse the project briefs we’ve been given and pick ones I’m going to complete. My main focus for the 3rd year is to create strong portfolio pieces, especially since there’s not enough 3D in it for the time being. At DMU Game Art, we have to choose 1 direction we’re going to specialize in for the final projects, and for me this will be 3D characters and props.
3D characters because of my love for anatomy and pretty people.
Props because I want to show the diversity of my 3D modelling
and sculpting skills.
For my 3D art to be portfolio worthy I’ll also need to learn
a lot on the technical matter (e.g. using shaders, efficient unwrapping, etc.)
and that’s what I’ll document on this blog.
Enjoy 😊
Brief contenders:
1.Prop brief – RARE
3 props in a Sea of Thieves style presented on a diorama.
I’m interested in this brief as I really like the SoT aesthetic
and it’s extremely specific. It teaches common industry practice such as proper
naming conventions as well as material and texture set up.
It’s also very specific with its concepts and materials. Because
of that it’ll be challenging to produce the desired outcome but that’s why I
want to take on this brief.
2.Character brief – Hidatsa
1 NPC character that’s an 1830’s Hidatsa warrior.
What I like about this brief is the amount of small details
within hair and clothing, however, I don’t think completing this brief would
benefit my portfolio. In addition to that, studios I’m interested in applying
for don’t release games in this sort of setting therefore I’ll look for
something more fitting. Sorry warrior!
3.Character brief – Creature
1 horror villain creature
Now we’re talking, I’m definitely including this brief in my
line up as I’m interested in expanding my portfolio with non-standard anatomy
creatures and also am a big fan of horrors/villains. The anatomy and design
elements have t be grounded in reality, therefore I’ll have an opportunity to
study various animals/bugs when concepting my creature.
4.Character brief – Helmet
1 NPC character wearing a helmet
This brief caught my attention as it allows for some
artistic freedom since the character has to convey its personality with its
appearance. Since I’m interested in both concepting and 3d modelling (with
emphasis on 3D) it’d be a great learning opportunity.
5.Character brief – Sunset Overdrive
1 possible SO character
I’ve been thinking about this brief for a few days, but
ultimately have decided that the game aesthetic is not something I’m a big fan
of. However, 3D wise, it’s a great brief as I’d get to explore very stylised
and exaggerated characters. Nevertheless, I think this project would not
benefit me as some of the previous ones.
Concluding, the projects I’m going to go with are: RARE props,
horror creature and a helmet wearing character.
